Election

  • Counting of the Electoral Votes- The Congress meets in joint session to count the electoral votes. Public Law 110-430 changed the date of the electoral vote in Congress in 2009 from January 6 to January 8. This date change is effective only for the 2008 presidential election.
  • Inauguration of US President- The President and Vice President take office. Public Schools are closed in Southern Maryland. Tickets can be obtained ONLY through your congressional representatives. Shuttle buses are running from the county to DC.
  • US President Formally Elected- The Electoral College meets and officially elects the President of the United States.
  • Presidential Candidate Debate- Letter from Michelle Obama This Friday, we'll reach another milestone in this campaign -- the first debate of the general election, on September 26th at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time. Millions of Americans will tune in to watch Barack debate John McCain about America's foreign policy and our role in the world.
  • Voter Registration Reopens- Voter Registration reopens today after the General Election. You can check to see if you're registered at the MD Voter Clearing House.
  • GENERAL ELECTION DAY- The polls are open in St. Mary's County from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. If you are in line at 8 p.m., you will still be allowed to vote. Less busy times of day are between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Find your polling place at MD Voter Clearing House.
  • Deadline to Register to Vote- Any new neighbors? Please let them know that Voter Registration must be completed by October 14. You can check to see if you're registered at the MD Voter Clearing House.
  • Deadline to apply for Absentee Ballot by Mail- This is the last day to apply for an absentee Ballot by mail. You can still get an application for an absentee ballot by going IN PERSON to the St. Mary's County Board of Elections in Leonardtown.   • 2008 National Student/Parent Mock Election- The National Student/Parent Mock Election (NSPME) is pleased to announce that the 2008 Mock Election will be carried out -- with the collaboration of Google -- in schools all across Maryland, as well as in all 50 states, Washington D.C., and in American schools overseas. Google will collect all the votes and host the national election headquarters for the NSPME at its Washington, D.C.
