Community Event

  • Counting of the Electoral Votes- The Congress meets in joint session to count the electoral votes. Public Law 110-430 changed the date of the electoral vote in Congress in 2009 from January 6 to January 8. This date change is effective only for the 2008 presidential election.
  • Inauguration of US President- The President and Vice President take office. Public Schools are closed in Southern Maryland. Tickets can be obtained ONLY through your congressional representatives. Shuttle buses are running from the county to DC.
  • Forum: Energy in St. Mary's County- Open Forum Future of Energy and the Environment in St. Mary’s County Date: Saturday, January 10 Time: 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Location: Lexington Park Library rooms A&B
  • M. L. King Prayer Breakfast- A prayer Breakfast will be held in honor of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at 9 a.m. in the Campus Center.
  • Veterans' Day Parade in Leonardtown- Leonardtown, MD – St. Mary’s County Board of Commissioners, the Town of Leonardtown, and parade organizers invite the public to come out and salute America’s Veterans at the Annual Veterans Day Parade in Leonardtown, on Tuesday, November 11, 2008!
  • Election Night Party at Old Breton Inn- Election Night Party at Old Breton Inn! After the Polls close come to the Old Breton Inn -- Watch the returns, enjoy great food, and fun. Cash bar will be available! Mark your calendar -- it has been a long election season -- come and have some fun!
  • Community Health Fair- The Way to Wellness The St. Mary’s County Community Health Fair will be Friday, October 24, 2008, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Loffler Senior Center at Chancellors Run Regional Park in Great Mills, Maryland.
  • 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony- The Board of County Commissioners invites the public and County staff to attend the Annual Remembrance Ceremony to reflect on the tragedies that occurred to our nation on September 11, 2001. The ceremony will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2008, at noon, outside of the Potomac Building at the flagpole and the Freedom Garden.
  • Hazardous Waste Collection- St. Mary’s County is sponsoring annual Household Hazardous Waste Day (HHW) Day events September 27 and October 25, 2008, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the St. Andrew's Landfill, 44825 St. Andrew's Church Road, California, Maryland, 20619.

  • 2008 National Student/Parent Mock Election- The National Student/Parent Mock Election (NSPME) is pleased to announce that the 2008 Mock Election will be carried out -- with the collaboration of Google -- in schools all across Maryland, as well as in all 50 states, Washington D.C., and in American schools overseas. Google will collect all the votes and host the national election headquarters for the NSPME at its Washington, D.C.

  • 41st Annual Blessing of the Fleet- The 2008 Blessing of the Fleet presented by the Optimist Club of the 7th District will be held October 4-5 at the St. Clement's Island Museum in Colton’s Point and on St. Clement’s Island. Come enjoy all of the weekend’s activities including live entertainment, free boat rides and tours, children’s activities and shows, fireworks and the “Blessing of the Fleet” on the MD Dove.
